The idea for Gifting Back started with our founder, Brandon Beavers. Growing up, Brandon’s family relied on community programs to help make Christmas possible. Programs like Shop with a Cop gave him the chance to experience Christmas in a way his family may not otherwise have been able to provide.
As Renew Exterior Lighting grew, it became clear that the company should give back in the same way others once helped his family. That idea became Gifting Back, a program dedicated to sponsoring kids for Christmas with every job sold.
Many of our customers even choose to donate when they hire us for their holiday and Christmas lighting projects, helping sponsor even more children each season.
Donations can be made in any amount. Even if you can only give a small amount, it helps bring one more child closer to Christmas.

Some people choose to sponsor a full child, while others contribute smaller amounts that combine with other donations to make the program possible. Over the years we have received donations ranging from $5 to over $2,500.
Every dollar goes directly toward helping children experience Christmas.
Children are encouraged to divide their budget between toys and necessities such as clothes, shoes, coats, and other everyday items. If a child needs to spend the entire amount on necessities, they absolutely can.
Children in the program are recommended by school counselors, who help identify students who have already been vetted by the school as families truly in need of support.
Volunteers then take the children shopping and help make the experience special.
Volunteers cry. Parents cry. Sometimes even the cashiers cry. Because the truth is, children should not have to carry the weight of adult struggles.
One year, three children had recently lost their grandfather in a car accident just weeks before Christmas. They moved in with their aunt, who was doing everything she could to support them, but the kids only had one set of clothes each. During their shopping trip, almost the entire $750 combined budget was spent on clothes, with only a few toys.

One year, a child spent his entire $250 on groceries for his family. His father kept encouraging him to buy toys, but the child insisted the family needed food more and filled the cart with milk, bread, eggs, and other basic groceries.

At another event, a young boy showed up wearing size 14 men’s slippers in the middle of winter. They belonged to his uncle and were the only shoes he had. They were muddy and far too large for him. The first thing he asked when shopping was whether he had enough money to buy a pair of shoes.

Each volunteer helps take children shopping and guide them through the experience. The goal is eventually to have one volunteer per child, so every kid receives the attention and support they deserve during their shopping trip.
In past years we have sometimes been a few volunteers short, which meant volunteers had to take multiple children shopping at once. More volunteers means more kids can participate and every child gets a more personal experience.
